Scope: Multi-site structural due diligence for rooftop solar PV rollout

Tesco’s Net Zero strategy required a large-scale rollout of rooftop solar PV across its store portfolio. However, the presence of rooftop plant, services and obstructions introduced complex localised snow drift effects. These created variable loading conditions, increasing the risk of overstressing and limiting potential system sizes if not properly understood.

Rather than adopting a conservative approach, each roof was assessed individually to determine how drift effects influenced structural performance and where capacity could be safely maximised.

Our approach

BMG Surveys Ltd carried out detailed inspections and structural appraisals across multiple sites, including:

Assessment of steel and timber frames, purlin sizes, spans, spacing and restraint
Review of roof condition and build-up/construction and fixings
Full loading analysis (dead, PV, snow including drift, and wind)
Checks at Ultimate and Serviceability Limit States
Targeted engineering solutions and installation guidance

The outcome

Our assessments enabled clear, confident decision-making across the portfolio, allowing sites to progress efficiently. Where constraints existed, practical solutions were developed to maximise usable roof area without compromising safety.

In many cases, drift effects were localised, allowing the majority of the roof to be utilised for solar installation.
